Morocco has endured its longest recorded drought, with six consecutive years of below-average rainfall from 2019 to 2024. The hydrological year ending in 2024 was the driest since records began, with just 106.4 mm of rain.

The prolonged dry spell has strained agricultural yields and water resources, exacerbating existing vulnerabilities in rural communities dependent on farming for their livelihoods.

Now, as a super El Niño event looms, concerns are rising about the potential shift from drought to extreme flooding, which could further destabilize already fragile ecosystems and infrastructure.
