Hidden genetic advantages allowed brown tree snakes to thrive on Guam despite inbreeding, according to a new study using advanced DNA sequencing techniques.

Researchers identified over 19,000 significant genetic differences, many linked to immunity and olfactory functions, which may have enabled the invasive species to adapt rapidly to their new environment.

The findings suggest that even small founding populations can carry enough genetic diversity to overcome inbreeding depression and achieve high population densities, posing a significant threat to native ecosystems.
