Intensifying El Niño conditions have sparked widespread wildfires across Indonesia, endangering orangutan populations. Seven orangutans were rescued through August as conservationists race to save them from burning forests.

The fires are exacerbated by dry weather patterns associated with the El Niño phenomenon, which has historically increased fire risks in Borneo. This environmental crisis not only threatens wildlife but also disrupts local ecosystems and communities.
