Ancient Sediments Reveal Unexpected Resilience in Atlantic Circulation System
Seafloor sediments from 3.4 million years ago show that despite a near-shutdown of warm, salty water flow from the Indian Ocean into the Atlantic, the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) did not weaken as anticipated.
Historically, scientists believed that disruptions in this critical oceanic 'lifeline' would significantly impact global climate patterns by weakening the AMOC.
However, these findings suggest a more complex and resilient system than previously understood, with parts of the circulation actually strengthening during periods of reduced warm water inflow.
